Hiring a Marketing Agency: Key Considerations for Choosing the Perfect Partner

Updated October 19, 2026

A useful marketing proposal should tell you what will be done, who will do it, what it costs and how you will judge the result. For a small business, those details matter more than a long list of channels or promises of growth.

Before comparing agencies, write down your main service, ideal customer, geographic service area and the action you want people to take. A Farmington service business looking for qualified inquiries needs a different plan from an online store trying to increase orders.

Start with one business goal

Choose a goal that connects to the work you want more of: inquiries about a specific service, appointments, quote requests or purchases. Then define what makes a lead useful. Location, service needed and project fit may matter more than the total number of form submissions.

Bring a short brief to the first conversation: who you serve, where you work, the services you want to promote, your current website and any budget or timing limits. If you are unsure where inquiries come from today, say so; establishing a baseline may be part of the first phase.

Compare proposals on the same questions

  • Deliverables: Which pages, ads, emails, graphics or other materials are included? Ask for quantities and a delivery schedule where appropriate.
  • Budget: Separate agency fees, advertising spend, software, photography and other outside costs. Ask what happens if the scope changes.
  • Responsibilities: Who supplies source material, approves content, manages inquiries and keeps the project moving?
  • Measurement: Which actions will be tracked, who will review them and how often? Ask how test submissions and unsuitable inquiries will be treated.
  • Accounts and handoff: Who owns the website, domain, advertising accounts, analytics access and creative files? Ask how access and documentation are handled at the end of the engagement.

Check the website before increasing promotion

More visitors will have limited value if they land on an unclear page or cannot contact you easily. Review the page on a phone: can a visitor understand the service, confirm your coverage and find the next step?

Ask whether the proposal includes landing-page changes, form checks, mobile navigation and the content needed to answer common questions. A campaign and a website project may need to be planned together, but the work and costs should be explicit.

Ask for evidence that matches the work

Request an example relevant to the service you need. For a website project, ask about navigation, content, forms and maintenance. For a campaign, ask what was measured, the time period involved and how the result related to the customer’s goal.

A past result provides context; it does not establish what your business will achieve. Be cautious about a proposal that promises a specific ranking or lead count without explaining the assumptions, scope and measurement.

Agree on the first phase and review point

A smaller first phase can help establish priorities: review the current site and tracking, improve the most relevant pages, then choose the channels that fit your audience and budget. Agree on what you will review, when you will review it and which decisions that review should support.
